| The
traditional Thistle Cup, sponsored by St. Andrews’
Scot School was run Saturday June 20th. It had
to be moved from its original date, Sunday 21st
because of the Fathers’ Day celebration.
This had its goodies and its drawbacks. Run
on Sunday it would have admitted more competitors
(of the original 39 yachts only 21 made it to
the starting line due to extremely low tides),
but wind was excellent on Saturday when the
regatta was raced.
A
well designed circuit, took less than an hour
to race it for the fastest ships. St. Matthew’s
had a great performance, with “Timido
II” and “Guarango” in a pole
position. “Coni II” winning ORC
Club formula also deserves to be honored. Our
fleet also included “Francesco”
(Skippered by Mr. Mich).
Unfortunately
Marcelo Amatti (St. Matthew’s North) and
children, with “SUR” were unable
to race due to low tides, but we look forward
to see him (and family) on the next Dragon’s
Cup heading Colonia del Sacramento, Uruguay.
Organized
by Club Náutico Olivos, the event was
carried out according to the best of sailing
traditions and fair play rules. We praise “Timido
II” for its outstanding crew (Mr. Ferrario
and crewmembers).
For
St. Matthew’s Sailing Committee it was
an excellent result on this challenge. Working
on a consistent and powerfull but not too large
fleet since 2001, we managed to build a strong
enough fleet to beat bigger fleets and win the
Thistle Cup – Commodore’s Cup established
by St. Andrew’s Former Pupil Club more
than 50 years ago defending effectively the
lead of the Interschool Yachting Championship
2009 circuit.
We
well come all those who were in, captains and
crew and hope to have them back in the starting
line at the next “Dragon’s Cup”
next August.
